What We’re Listening To: March 2024

Adam- The Halo Benders – God Don’t Make No Junk

“Out of print for years, my favorite 3 record run of the 1990’s is back in stock. Built to Spill’s Doug Martch and Beat Happening/K records head weirdo in their prime. 2 unique vocal registers often singing different songs right over each other – and it works!”

Molly- RZA – Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai
“Not to trash Kurosawa, but this is the best fucking Samurai movie soundtrack you’ll ever hear. Featuring vocal tracks from Wu-Tang Clan and Rza not featured in the film.”

Duane- The Kinks – The Kink Kontroversy

“Released in late 1965, this was the band’s third album and it seemed to mark a turn to Ray Davies’ more thoughtful and introspective songwriting. All in all, a very fine set of songs — but what really sets it apart is their cover of Sleepy John Estes classic country blues song, ‘Milk Cow Blues’ which features one of the toughest, loudest, most unhinged guitar breaks in known history!”

Nick- Sleepyeyes – Forget About Her
“Mythical lo-fi house from Paxico Records. Moody, dark and compressed.”

Delaney- Djo – Twenty Twenty

“Debut album from Djo, aka Joe Keery, aka the pretty hair guy from Stranger Things — It’s a fun, synthy, certified bop. Not saying it’s an unexpected masterpiece, but not not saying that.!”

Duane- Electric Eels – Spin Age Blasters
“Seriously, you have to listen to this: pure sonic angel dust. Safer than drugs, louder that a velociraptor passing gas after eating the entire offensive and defensive lines of KC Chiefs, this album is the ultimate room clearer. Party over but no one seems to know it? No problem, slap this baby on….”

Doug A.- Joe Henderson – Inner Urge

“One of Joe Henderson’s early Blue Note recordings remastered by Kevin Gray on Blue Note’s Classic Vinyl Series. Teaming up with McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones from John Coltrane’s Quartet and Bob Cranshaw from Sonny Rollin’s group, this has a seriously talented lineup. Compositions include “Inner Urge” which has become a  jazz standard and “Isotope” a tribute to Thelonius Monk.”

Liz- The Last Dinner Party – Prelude to Ecstasy
“Think Siouxsie meets Florence, add in a choir, flute, mandolin, keyboards and guitar and you’ve got a sweet mix of pop and classical music. My Lady of Mercy has become my new earworm. I’m looking forward to seeing them at the Gothic in August.”

Nick- Beograd – Remek Depo

“Yugoslavian coldwave from 1982. Only available in physical format!!!!”
